Navigating a bookshop

My tutor posed a question in my feedback about how we navigate a bookshop. What languages do we recognise to help us find what we’re looking for? I started to consider colour, type, cover content, and sometimes the structure too. After looking at my own bookshelf and doing several searches for different genres online, I created a mind map of genres and noted down some defining features that help us find our way around a bookshop.

This was a great way to bring together everything I have learnt so far about book design and it also made me miss visiting a bookshop even more! (Being in lockdown means we cannot go into bookshops at the moment) It was pleasant to browse through covers and see the common themes that linked genres together.
