Feedback 4

Your submission continues to be evidence of a thorough and engaged approach to illustration. The research you undertake as part of this is conscientious and interested, so continue to make the connections between your work and that of others. There are some playful outputs which is where we can see an emerging creative voice. Continue to harness, develop and capture this visual energy.

It was great to receive feedback and get some pointers for the final part of ‘Key Steps in Illustration’. I agree that I need to continue to develop my use of digital techniques; this is completely new to me so I know this is an area I must spend time experimenting with and incorporating into my practice.

My tutor commented on my engagement with artist research and how I enjoy exploring others’ practice, even if it is completely different to my own. I was pleased that this enjoyment was evident. Often I am inspired by the recommendations and I think it is important to consider how others work to gain perspective and ideas.

I also used some of my own reference material for a few tasks; I would like to try to do this more, whenever possible. It makes me feel more connected to the task and gives me a clearer idea of the purpose.

I picked out the key areas to focus on…

  • Look at animators’ use of red pencil
  • Return to ‘Museum poster’ – crop and try text. Look at Johnson Banks, Abram Games and Charles and Ray Eames (global culture)
  • Doodle/sketch style – “unfinished creative works are completed by the audience” – look at combining with digital approaches
  • Grapus – Pierre Bernard – French National Parks Emblem
  • Noma Bar – subtle use of metaphor
  • Cat collage – could this feed into print process?
  • Character design (tutor agreed that first character seemed too lifeless) – explore filled silhouettes – Adam Higton
  • Bricolage and assemblage – look at Jo Hassall

Continue harness the experimental and playful ideas that arise in the preliminary stages of your work. The new print and digital methods that we can see show great potential and it’d be good to see you continue to challenge and develop these.
