Exercise: Making a moodboard

This exercise was very enjoyable! I aimed to expand on the ideas I had already started to visualise in the previous exercise. I knew I wanted to use a map somewhere, and also images of suitcases and bags. I collected a couple of tickets and found some old stamps too (these made me think of postcards). Lots of the images came from BBC World Histories Magazine Issue 11 (Aug/Sep 2018 – Edited by Matt Elton. Immediate Media Company Bristol Ltd: Bristol) and National Geographic (08.18 – Edited by Chris Packham. National Geographic Partners LLC: Washington DC). I tend to save magazines like this for inspiration and there were lots of relevant photos and illustrations to link with travel.

It was important to emphasise the bright colours I had started to develop on my visual mindmap and grouped similar colours together. At the end, I used string to show a route over the map in the top right, to add some texture. String often makes me think of travel – tying tags to bags, tying up parcels to send elsewhere and old-fashioned evacuee tags (or Paddington Bear!)

The final moodboard is vibrant and quite retro in style too. On reflection, I would try to show more modern travel if I did this task again, and some more modes of transport too, as these are underrepresented.
