Exercise: Illustrating visual space

I chose images I had photographed – a child walking away from the viewer, a tree, and a building from a trip to Lyon (I liked the angle because I’d taken the photograph looking up at the building). Immediately, I thought the scene would look very touristy or like a fantasy forest with a grand castle hidden among the trees.

I kept it fairly simple when building up the image – I tried to create depth/a sense of foreground and background using only the different sized photographs, rather than drawing lines. I experimented with angles, especially the building, but found myself keeping the person vertical. I didn’t feel the image worked if the child was at an angle, but perhaps I was being too restrictive!
